Pack Tech Moulding

Frequently Asked Questions

Find out the answers to our most commonly asked questions.

Are our products made from food grade materials
All polymers used for packaging requiring food contact are FDA approved. If you are exporting and require the polymer to meet other food grade certification, then we can provide this on request.
Do you offer off the shelf packaging solutions
Pack Tech has a range of stock products, many of which are ex stock.
Is it possible to have a customised packaging solution
Many of our stock products can be customised to suit your needs, whether this is changing the colour or adding decoration (In Mould Label). If the off the shelf solution does not meet your requirements, then we can develop a bespoke solution to meet your needs.
Is it possible to have a special colour
Yes, we offer a range of standard colours, but we can offer a customised colour that matches a specific PMS colour.
What is the typical process/timeline to create a IML label
From receiving the approved artwork of the label to moulded product the typical timeframe is 6-8 weeks.
What types of labels are available for use in IML
We offer a range of standard dielines/shapes. These dielines are available in clear and white (smooth and textured) substrates.
What are the performance characteristics of the polymers used in PTM packaging
We have a variety of polymers and grades available to meet the desired performance requirements of the packaging.
What types of liner materials are available for caps
We offer PE foam wads, pressure seals, induction seals and vented liners however if you require a special seal solution, we can source the appropriate liner to meet your requirements.
What is the shelf life of the packaging
If stored correctly, e.g. no direct sunlight, stable temperature, clean and dry location then we guarantee performance for 12 months, although it is likely the shelf life would be considerably longer. Please note if the storage conditions are not managed correctly then the shelf life could be well less than 12 months.
Is there a minimum I have to purchase
For non-stock items and customised products, we have minimum order quantities. For stock Items, depending on the product they are sold by either the pack or by the full pallet.
What quality systems are in place at PTM
We use a manufacturing execution system called Aspect for the management of production and quality monitoring and control of all products manufactured.
What considerations does PTM give to the sustainability aspects of the packaging
We consider sustainability when it comes to the design and manufacture of all our packaging.
Where is the packaging manufactured
We are New Zealand owned with a purpose-built factory based in Christchurch. We have partners for specialty accessories both in New Zealand and Overseas, but the majority of our packaging is made in house.
Why Biobased
Reduction in the use of fossil raw material stocks, positive contribution to CO2 reduction, and a substantial increased circularity (post-life and pre-life).
How is biobased plastic made
Sugar is extracted from sugar cane through pressing. The first, richest pressing of the sugar cane is used for consumption purposes. The less rich follow-up pressing is then used for, among other things, the production of biobased plastic. The extracted sugar is converted to Ethanol (alcohol), from which Bio polyethylene is then made.
Is biobased packaging recyclable
These packages are fully recyclable. The post-life circularity in Europe is only 42.4%. By using bio plastic, however, pre-life circularity of more than 50% is added, which greatly increases the total circularity of the packaging.
Why not degradable
No degradable material because the waste collection logistics for this is missing.
Are there special processing requirements for biobased packaging
Functional performance corresponds to conventional packaging such as denesting, impact resistance, dimensions, fittings (container/lid), liquid tightness, top load, hot fill. In addition, the impact resistance at low temperatures of the biobased material has been found to be better than that of the conventional material.
What plastics do you use
We manufacture our packaging from polypropylene, polyethylene both of which are recyclable via many waste streams in New Zealand. In many cases we can offer sugar-based HDPE or use of recycled polymers or recycled content if the performance requirements can be met.
Are your products recyclable
All the packaging we manufacture is made from recyclable plastics and can be recycled in New Zealand.
What is In Mould Label (IML)
In Mould Labelling (IML) is a production technique that places the printed label in the mould and is fused with the polypropylene of the packaging, giving high resolution artwork and a durable product. IML are ideal for food packaging, giving a bright, clear image that is fully bonded and does not detach, delaminate, or degrade. The durability and scratch-resistance of the final product means it is a most hygienic and content secure option, as it is not subject to fissures or creases that can harbour bacteria.
What are your standard lead times
The typical lead-time for packaging on hand is 1-2 days for order processing plus shipping. For make-to-order products allow 4-5 weeks plus shipping.
How long does my order take when shipped
Shipping times will vary based on your address but typically South Island shipping is 1-2 days and North Island shipping is 3-4 days. Allow 1-2 days extra for rural or remote locations.
Does Pack Tech operate under a product safety programme
Our factory operates a product safety programme that is based on HACCP protocols. The programme is externally audited, and evidence of our certification can be provided on request.
